Took the bus to Siracusa. Just over an hour to get there.
The city is in 2 parts: the mainland and the island of Ortigia:
On Ortigia.
Temple of Apollo:
Meandered through the island, stopped at this shop & got a wedding present for Annie. It’s been there 100 years, the person who helped us was 4th generation family. Nice.
Looped around the perimeter, back to the center. Wishing we had sunglasses & shorts - a nice day!
Very good lunch outside at La Foglia 1984. Nice conversation with a Belorussian living in Istanbul, traveling to a conference in Malta, mother lives in SF.
Walked back onto the mainland, to the Neapolitan Archaeological Park. A Greek theatre, disappointingly covered with wooden seats, looked like being prepped for an outdoor concert event, and the quarry from which the ancients gleaned the stone to build the town on Ortigia. The most impressive thing: Orecchio Di Dionysio. It’s late, look it up yerself..
While there, this started. Be sure the sound is on:
We were happy to have warm clothes and umbrellas.
Oh and there’s a Roman amphitheater too:
